Chewsday Review- Woolworths Beef sausages with carrot and sautéed onion

This is the first ever Chewsday Review featuring a sausage. I can’t believe it’s been 4 years of weekly reviews without once including a snag. What a travesty! If your kiddos love sausages then you’ll be interested to read about Woolworths new Veg & Beef sausages WITH carrot and sautéed onion.


🔹Australian Beef (67%), Vegetables (24%) (Carrot (12%), Sauteed Onion (12%) (Onion, Vegetable Oil), Water, Salt, Firming Agent (1422)), Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Salt, Sugar, Mineral Salt (451), Herbs & Spice (includes Parsley, Basil), Dehydrated Vegetables, Preservative (223), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Yeast Extract, Natural Colour (Paprika Oleoresin), Fermented Red Rice, Garlic Extract, Edible Collagen Casing.

🔹Soy lecithin Preservative 223 and 1422 acts to keep the texture consistent in the sausage and are generally well-tolerated. Mineral salt 451 is a triphosphate and can be linked to kidney stones in susceptible people, otherwise regarded as safe.

🔹Common allergens: None. This product does contain sulphites which can be difficult to tolerate for some people.

🔶The positives:

🔹The sausages are 24% vegetables (12% carrot and 12% onion). This means there’s less meat overall, but a decent amount of vegetables. Every sausage provides a 1/4 serve of veggies. Additionally, there’s only 2g difference in meat content between these and other sausages with a higher meat content.

🔹The sodium content is 424mg/100g which is technically just above healthy guidelines, but this is significantly lower than other sausages. For example, regular bbq sausages are 610mg/100g and my normal faves (Peppercorns) are 450mg/100g.

🔹Low sugar content.

🔹The sausages actually have a little bit of fibre from the vegetables. Each sausage has 1.4g which is 10% of a young child’s recommended daily intake and 8% of a school-aged child’s daily requirements.

🔹They’re $6 a pack for 6 sausages, which works out to about $13 a kilo. Pretty reasonable really for a source of red meat.

🔶The negatives:

🔹The saturated fat is 5.6g/100g which is almost double healthy guidelines but again, this is much less than many other varieties. For example, regular bbq sausages are 12.5g/100g and Peppercorns are between 3-9g depending on the flavour variety.

🔹Sausages aren’t exactly a health food, and we don’t know about the cut of meat included in the ‘beef’. There’s also still a bit of filler in this product (starches, flour etc) but with 67% meat and 24% veggies it means that 91% is reasonably nutritious content.

🔶The marketing:

🔹”More veggies, same great taste” Yep, I agree. These were actually quite tasty and my toddler ate them happily.

🔹”Made in Australia from at least 94% Australian ingredients” Great.

🔶The alternatives:

🔹I’m certainly not claiming that sausages are a super nutritious food, but they do tend to be a hit with young kids. Some children find it really difficult to eat red meat and this can definitely be a food to help them get there.

🔹I like this variety and will happily buy it from time to time when we’re having sausages. Remember that the high salt content means they’re not suitable for babies under 12months.

🔹I also like the Peppercorns brand of sausages, particularly their extra lean beef variety. 🔹There are meat patties and mince with added veg in this new range. I wouldn’t bother with the mince but the burger patties also look like a reasonable option.
