Chewsday Review- Woolworths
Yoghurt month continues here at Mealtime Building Blocks. So, without further ado I introduce to you today’s Chewsday Review- Woolworths branded yoghurt pouches (in vanilla)
🔹Skim Milk, Sugar, Cream, Milk Solids, Thickeners (Modified Tapioca Starch, Modified Corn Starch, Corn Starch), Mineral Salt (Calcium Phosphate), Stabilisers (Agar, Pectin), Water, Natural Vanilla Flavour, Acidity Regulators (331, 330), Live Cultures
🔹Sugar is listed here as the second ingredient, meaning that added sugar is the ingredient in the second highest concentration by weight. This should always make you a bit wary. There’s added juice in the fruit flavoured version too which will contribute to the sweetness and overall sugar content in those.
🔹Common allergens include: milk
🔹Low saturated fat content, well within healthy guidelines
🔹Live cultures for healthy tummies
🔹A decent source of some calcium at 248mg/100g. But, this pouch is quite a bit smaller than some of the others so one pouch provides 34% of a toddler’s requirements and 25% of an older child’s daily requirements.
🔹Sugar content is within healthy guidelines, and at 10.3g/100g (7.2g/pack) it’s in the middle of the field regarding sugar. Remember that some sugar will naturally be present from the lactose in milk but this product does contain added sugar.
🔹At 75c each they’re cheaper than the others, but they’re still double the price (by weight) of family tubs of yoghurt.
🔹This is quite a processed yoghurt with the addition of starches and stabilisers, maybe due to the use of the skim milk (which does contribute to the low saturated fat content). Although not harmful, these are not on my ideal list of yoghurt ingredients.
🔹Squeezie packs are convenient and less messy than spoons BUT they really don't help children to develop biting and chewing skills that they need for other foods. They also contribute significantly to plastic waste (you can recycle them at big supermarkets). I’d prefer this yoghurt scooped out of a bigger tub.
🔹”Taste tested by kids” Apparently 32 out of 34 kids surveyed by Woolworths said they liked this product. Not a huge sample size, so I wouldn’t put too much value on this statement.
🔹”No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives” (as is the case for most kid’s yoghurts).
🔹”Source of calcium.” Indeed it is.
🔹This isn’t a bad option, although if you want the lowest sugar option, this one isn’t it. Depends what’s important to you.
Remember, you don’t have to buy ‘kid’ yoghurt for your child. A scoop out of the family tub is much better. However, I know that people like to use these, particularly when out and about.
I also prefer yoghurt less processed and made from just milk products. Personally, I like the Petit Miam no added sugar best. Otherwise, yoghurts with as low a sugar content as possible (at least less than 10g of sugar per 100g) and calcium content of more than 200mg per 100g.
